Cost benefit analysis: food waste collections for hospitals

The purpose of the work is to undertake a cost benefit analysis (CBA) to assess the financial costs and benefits of separate food waste collections from hospitals in Scotland and England compared to other disposal options for food waste.

The work will include:

  • Providing an overview of the disposal routes currently used for food waste in NHS hospitals in England and Scotland.
  • Identifying the quantity and types of available food waste disposed of via each route.
  • Identifying the key variables required to input into a cost benefit analysis to evaluate the financial costs and benefits of each collection and disposal option.
  • Undertaking a cost benefit analysis for a range of collection and disposal options.
  • Undertaking a cost benefit analysis for a range of collection and disposal options.
  • Determining the availability of data which could be used to inform an environmental CBA of the disposal options considered.
