Halving Waste to Landfill Case Study: Morrisons and Bowmer & Kirkland
Waste reduction in the construction of a distribution centre.
For the development of Willow Green Distribution Centre, Morrisons required the contractor (Bowmer & Kirkland) to minimise adverse impacts that construction has on the environment; the project objective was “to reduce waste and use materials efficiently”. This was achieved through the design process, materials selection, construction techniques and operational methods.
Key accomplishments and savings
Introduction of contractual requirements on the contractor for waste performance, monitoring and reporting.
99% of total waste (construction + excavation) diverted from landfill.
91% of construction waste diverted from landfill
3.81m3 waste per 100m2 which achieves full credits under the BREEAM credit Wst 1.
