Halving Waste to Landfill Case Study: Morrisons and Bowmer & Kirkland

Waste reduction in the construction of a distribution centre.

For the development of Willow Green Distribution Centre, Morrisons required the contractor (Bowmer & Kirkland) to minimise adverse impacts that construction has on the environment; the project objective was “to reduce waste and use materials efficiently”. This was achieved through the design process, materials selection, construction techniques and operational methods.

Key accomplishments and savings

  • Introduction of contractual requirements on the contractor for waste performance, monitoring and reporting.
  • 99% of total waste (construction + excavation) diverted from landfill.
  • 91% of construction waste diverted from landfill
  • 3.81m3 waste per 100m2 which achieves full credits under the BREEAM credit Wst 1.
