Recycled content case study: Scottish Water Solutions

Scottish Water Solutions improves levels of recycled content for a waste water treatment works in Hamilton.

This work looked at the refurbishment of a waste water treatment works in Hamilton, Scotland. Analysis showed that the project used 9% recycled content which could have been increased four-fold through product substitution, with no impact on the overall project cost.

Key results

  • By reusing excavated material on site, Scottish Water was able to save £19,000 by avoiding the need to purchase primary fill.
  • Scottish Water Solutions was able to meet the Scottish Executive’s request to achieve a minimum of 10 per cent recycled content in new public construction builds over £1m.
