Recycled content case study: Sports academy, Scunthorpe

May 2008

A joint initiative between Yorkshire Forward and North Lincolnshire Council assessing the recycled content of a sports academy in Central Park, Scunthorpe.

Background

The redevelopment is part of Scunthorpe’s urban renaissance programme funded by Yorkshire Forward and North Lincolnshire Council.

The sports centre will include six bespoke build ‘pods’ or dome-shaped structures holding a number of sports and activity facilities including:

  • eight-lane, 25 metre swimming pool;
  • learner pool;
  • six court sports hall;
  • 75 station fitness suite;
  • dance studio; and
  • crèche

The pods will be covered with a 'living roof' of heather and grass and it is thought to be the first time this type of construction has been used for a major leisure project in the UK.
