More than 48 million tyres are disposed of each year in the UK, according to BERR, which presents a major opportunity for the use of reprocessed tyres.
The EU Landfill Directive is an important driver for used tyre recycling as it bans the disposal of tyres to landfill. Whole tyres were banned from July 2003 and shredded tyres in July 2006. The ban applied to almost all tyres including car, commercial, motorcycle, aircraft, and industrial (including solid tyres).
With tyre material banned from disposal at landfill, WRAP helped to develop and create end uses for recovery and re-use of used tyres.
